Large Format Inkjet FAQs

What are the preferred software programs for large format inkjet prints?

QuarkXPress, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, PageMaker, Freehand, PhotoShop.

What resolution do my images need to be for large format printing?

100 ppi (pixels per inch) at the final output size. Increasing the resolution beyond 100 ppi at final output size will not enhance the quality of your image, it will only make your file size larger making it more difficult to manage and take longer to process. (An example would be: 6"x6" original to be output 20"x20". 20 divided by 6 = 3.3. So you are enlarging your image 4 times. 4x100ppi = 400 ppi. You should scan your original at 400 ppi, when your image is enlarged 4 times the resolution goes down 4 times, resulting in a 20x20 at 100 ppi.)

Vector based graphics & text (Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, QuarkXPress, and PageMaker) are scaleable to any size as they are. But remember that placed Raster Images within these applications must still meet the "PPI" requirements.

What should I include when I send in a file for large format inkjet prints?

You should include the original file, plus all fonts and placed images, even if they are embedded used in the presentation. Also include a hardcopy proof, final specs such as size finishing etc.

Can The IDM Group make a large format print from my PhotoShop file?

Yes. Image files should be saved as CMYK at 100 dpi at final print size.

Can The IDM Group match my Pantone colors on the inkjet printers?

Our inkjet printers are CMYK devices and cannot guarantee exact Pantone matching. If color is critical, we can provide you with sample color swatches of variations on the required colors. This will allow you to choose the "best match".

I have created my files in Microsoft Word. Can large format inkjet prints be made from it?

Word processing and spreadsheet applications adjust margins and graphics based on printer description and are not recommended for print production. If files are created in these types of applications, a hard copy is required when submitting your order, and additional charges for reformatting could be incurred. PDF files are accepted, but can produce unexpected results in regard to color and resolution. For best results, we recommend creating your file in one of the applications listed under supported software.

Can I submit my file via e-mail?

Yes.  Files can be submitted via email or FTP. Large files (over 10 MB) should be sent via FTP to ensure that they are received properly. Always include your name, phone number, company name and billing/delivery instructions on your e-mail requests.  In the case of FTP uploads, please follow up with an e-mail to inform us of the upload and to relay the job specifications.

Will The IDM Group make corrections to my file for me?

The IDM Group does not make corrections to any file sent in for production without direction from the client. All files submitted for production is processed "as-is" unless other instructions have been agreed upon between The IDM Group and the customer. Additional graphics charges may apply.
